Phu Quoc is the one place in Vietnam where any nationality can arrive without a visa - if the flight lands on the island from abroad and the whole stay is there. Here is how arriving at Phu Quoc airport works, when you need an e-visa instead, and the pre-arrival form required since June 2026.
Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) is on the island's west side, about 10 km south of Duong Dong, the main town. It is the only Vietnamese airport where travellers of every nationality can arrive without a visa - under conditions that are easy to break by accident.
Two ways to enter at Phu Quoc
| Phu Quoc visa exemption | E-visa (or your passport's own exemption) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who | Any nationality | Anyone |
| Longest stay | 30 days | Up to 90 days on the e-visa |
| Where you can go | Phu Quoc only | Anywhere in Vietnam |
| How you must arrive | On Phu Quoc, from abroad | Through any e-visa entry point |
| Cost | Nothing | The visa fee |
The exemption suits a beach holiday that starts and ends on the island. The moment the plan includes the mainland - a night in Ho Chi Minh City, a few days in Hoi An - you need a visa. Full Phu Quoc exemption rules.
Arriving on a direct international flight
This is the clean case. Phu Quoc has international flights from a number of Asian cities, and the routes change with the season.
- Staying only on Phu Quoc for 30 days or less: the exemption covers you. Carry a return or onward ticket leaving the island within 30 days, and your hotel booking - the airline will ask for both at check-in.
- Going on to the mainland, or staying longer: arrive on a single-entry e-visa and give Phu Quoc International Airport as the entry port.
Arriving through Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi
Most travellers from Europe, Australia, India and the Americas reach Phu Quoc with a connection. Here the detail matters:
- If you clear immigration at the first airport - because you collect your bags, change terminals or are on separate tickets - you have entered Vietnam there. The Phu Quoc exemption no longer applies, and you need a visa with that first airport as the entry port.
- If you stay airside and are ticketed through to Phu Quoc, the exemption can still apply. Whether that is possible depends on the airline and the airport; confirm it with your airline before relying on it.
When in doubt, an e-visa removes the question. Arriving at Ho Chi Minh City airport.
The pre-arrival form
Phu Quoc was the first airport added after Ho Chi Minh City: arrivals here have had to complete Vietnam's online pre-arrival form since June 2026. That includes travellers using the island's visa exemption. It is free on prearrival.immigration.gov.vn, takes a few minutes within 72 hours before you land, and gives you a QR code for passport control. How to complete the pre-arrival form.
From the aircraft to the arrivals hall
- Immigration. Show your passport, the pre-arrival QR code, and your e-visa if you have one. Travellers on the exemption should have their onward ticket and hotel booking ready. Check the entry stamp before you leave the desk - it shows how long you may stay.
- Baggage and customs. Declare more than US$5,000 in cash or VND 15 million.
- Arrivals hall. Taxis and ride-hailing cars reach Duong Dong in about 15 to 20 minutes; resorts in the south and north of the island take longer.
Changed your mind on the island?
If you arrived on the exemption and now want to see the mainland, you cannot apply for an e-visa from inside Vietnam - applications are only accepted from people outside the country. Leave the island for the mainland only once you have a visa that covers it. Ask us before you change any bookings and we will tell you what is possible.
Cruise passengers
Ships call at Phu Quoc's Duong Dong seaport, which is an e-visa entry point. If the cruise also stops elsewhere in Vietnam, check the whole itinerary: two Vietnamese ports with a foreign port between them need a multiple-entry e-visa. E-visa ports of entry.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa to fly into Phu Quoc?
Not if you arrive on Phu Quoc from abroad, stay only on the island and leave within 30 days. Any time on the mainland, or a longer stay, needs a visa.
Do I need the pre-arrival form for Phu Quoc?
Yes. Arrivals at Phu Quoc have needed it since June 2026, including travellers entering under the island's visa exemption.
Can I use the Phu Quoc exemption if I fly via Ho Chi Minh City?
Only if you stay airside and are ticketed through to Phu Quoc. If you pass through immigration in Ho Chi Minh City, you need a visa.
Is Phu Quoc airport an e-visa entry point?
Yes. Phu Quoc International Airport accepts e-visas, and so does the Duong Dong seaport.
Can I go from Phu Quoc to Ho Chi Minh City without a visa?
No. The exemption covers Phu Quoc only. A trip to the mainland needs a visa, arranged before you leave home.
My passport is already visa-free for Vietnam. Does the Phu Quoc rule matter?
Only if it gives you longer. A 14-day visa-free passport gets 30 days under the island rule when the conditions are met.
