The Vietnam e-visa costs US$25 for single entry and US$50 for multiple entry at the government's own rate. Here is what each route really costs once agent fees and airport charges are counted.

The Vietnamese government sets one fee for the e-visa and it is the same for every nationality. What varies is who lodges it for you, how fast you need it, and whether you end up paying twice because of a mistake.

    The government fee

    E-visa type Government fee
Single entry, up to 90 days US$25
Multiple entry, up to 90 days US$50

    Three things about that fee:

    • It is the same for 30 days or 90. There is no saving in asking for a shorter visa.
    • It is the same for tourism and business.
    • It is not refunded by the government if the application is refused or withdrawn.

    Applying yourself

You can apply directly on the Vietnam Immigration Department's e-visa portal and pay only the government fee. That is the cheapest route and plenty of people use it without trouble.

Where it goes wrong is the detail. The portal is strict about the photo and about names matching the passport's code lines, it does not email you when it wants something changed, and a refused application means paying the fee again. If you are comfortable with that, apply direct.

    Applying through an agent

An agent charges a service fee on top of the government fee. What you should get for it:

    • your photo and passport scan checked before anything is lodged
    • the application lodged and the status watched for you
    • a person to ask, and to fix whatever comes back
    • faster handling if you are close to your travel date

Our prices include the government fee, so the figure you see is the figure you pay: single-entry e-visa and multiple-entry e-visa. They are shown in your own currency and charged in Australian dollars.

A fair warning that applies to every agent, us included: you are paying for a service, not for a different visa. The e-visa you receive is the same document either way.

    Express and urgent fees

Faster processing is an extra charge on top of the standard price, because it means the application is handled ahead of the queue. It is worth it when you fly within a week; it is not worth it if you are simply impatient. The current Express and Urgent prices are on each visa page.

    Visa on arrival costs

A visa on arrival has two parts, and two payments:

    1. An approval letter, arranged through an agent before you fly - the agent's fee.
    2. A stamping fee at the airport: US$25 for single entry or US$50 for multiple entry, paid at the visa counter when you land.

Add passport photos, and time in the queue. It rarely works out cheaper than an e-visa, and it only works at international airports. How visa on arrival compares.

    Costs people forget

    • A second fee after a mistake. A wrong passport number or a rejected photo can mean applying, and paying, again.
    • Airport correction charges. If the details on your visa do not match your passport, airlines can refuse boarding, and fixing it at the airport costs far more than the visa did.
    • Card conversion. Paying a foreign-currency fee on a card adds your bank's exchange margin.
    • Overstay fines. Leaving after the date on your visa is fined before you are allowed to depart.

    What is refundable

    • Government fee: not refunded by the Vietnamese government once paid.
    • Our fee and the government fee: refunded in full if your visa is refused, or arrives later than the processing time we quoted. The conditions are in our terms.
