Vietnam quotes three working days for an e-visa and often takes five to seven. Here is how the count works, which holidays stop it, and what to do if you fly this week.

The official answer is three working days. The honest answer is that many applications take five to seven, and some longer. Knowing how the days are counted is what lets you plan around it.

How the three working days are counted

    • The clock starts when the immigration department has a complete application and the fee. A missing or rejected photo means the clock has not started.
    • The day you submit does not count.
    • Saturdays, Sundays and Vietnamese public holidays do not count.

So an application lodged on a Tuesday is counted Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and the visa arrives on Friday afternoon at the earliest - or the following Monday. Lodged on a Thursday, the same three days run to the middle of the next week.

    Holidays that stop processing

Vietnam's immigration offices close on public holidays, and the queue that builds up takes days to clear afterwards. The dates that matter most:

    • Tet (Lunar New Year) - the big one. Offices shut for about a week in late January or February. Tet falls on 6 February in 2027. Applications lodged just before it routinely take two weeks or more.
    • Hung Kings Commemoration Day - one day, in April.
    • Reunification Day and Labour Day - 30 April and 1 May, often joined into a long weekend.
    • National Day - 2 September, with an extra day or more around it.
    • New Year's Day - 1 January.

If your trip is near any of these, apply at least three weeks ahead.

Why an application takes longer than it should

    Almost always one of these:

    • The photo was rejected - wrong background, glasses, shadows, or a crop of the passport photo.
    • The passport scan was unreadable - glare across the code lines or a corner missing.
    • Details do not match the passport - name order, a missing middle name, a wrong digit.
    • Peak season. December to April and the weeks before Tet are the busiest.

The official portal does not email you when it wants a correction. The request sits on the status page until someone notices, which is why "it has been ten days and I have heard nothing" is so common. Checking the file before lodging, and watching the status afterwards, is the main thing an agent adds. Photo and scan rules.

    When to apply

    • Two to three weeks before you fly is comfortable in a normal month.
    • Four weeks if your trip is near Tet or another long holiday.
    • Not months ahead unless your dates are fixed. The visa's start and end dates are set when it is issued, and it cannot be moved later.

    If you fly this week

Faster handling exists, at a price. When you apply with us you can choose:

    • Standard - allows for the immigration department's normal three to seven working days
    • Express - handled ahead of the standard queue
    • Urgent - our fastest option, for travel within days

The current times and prices for each are on the e-visa page. Even urgent processing cannot run on a Sunday or a public holiday, so a Friday-evening application for a Saturday flight is not rescuable. Apply the moment you know you are going.

You must apply from outside Vietnam

E-visa applications are only accepted from people who are outside the country. If you are already in Vietnam on a visa or a visa-free stay and want a new e-visa, you have to leave first and wait for it somewhere else.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can I get a Vietnam e-visa in 24 hours?

Sometimes, with urgent processing on a working day. It depends on the time you apply and on the immigration department being open. Check the Urgent option on the visa page for what is currently possible.

Is processing faster for some nationalities?

The official time is the same for everyone. In practice some passports are approved more quickly than others, and a few are asked for extra information.

Does paying more guarantee a date?

It buys priority handling, not a government promise. If your visa arrives later than the processing time we quoted, we refund everything you paid us.

My e-visa has not arrived. What should I do?

Check your spam folder, then the status of the application. If you applied through us, message us with your reference and we will check it for you.
