Applied for a Vietnam e-visa and waiting? Here is how to check its status on the official portal, what you need to hand, how long each stage takes and what to do if it is late or refused.

Once an e-visa application is in, there is nothing to do but wait - and check. This guide covers the official lookup, the details it asks for and what to do with the answer.

    If you applied with us

Sign in to your account with the email you applied with. Each application shows where it is: being checked by our team, lodged with immigration, or issued. We email the e-visa as soon as it is granted, so you don't need to check the government portal as well. If anything needs fixing, we message you on WhatsApp before it is lodged.

If you applied on the government portal

The official lookup is the Search page of Vietnam's e-visa portal, evisa.gov.vn. You need four things:

    1. Your e-visa application number. It is in the confirmation email the portal sent after you paid. Keep that email - without the number there is no way to look the application up.
    2. The email address you entered on the application.
    3. Your date of birth as it appears in your passport. If your passport shows only a year of birth, the form lets you enter the year alone.
    4. The security code shown on the page.

The result shows whether the application is still being processed, has been granted or was not granted. A granted e-visa can be downloaded as a PDF; the portal also emails the result.

Use only evisa.gov.vn or thithucdientu.gov.vn. They are the only official addresses, and look-alike sites charge for things the official portal does for free.

    How long each stage takes

Vietnam's immigration department quotes three working days from a complete, paid application. Five to seven working days is common in busy periods. Three things slow it down:

    • Weekends and public holidays. Applications are processed Monday to Friday, Vietnam time. Tet, in late January or February, closes offices for about a week.
    • Time zones. An application sent on Friday evening from Sydney has missed Friday in Hanoi.
    • Errors. A photo that fails the checks or a passport number that doesn't match is the most common reason an application stalls or is refused.

If it has been more than five working days, check the status, then contact the portal's support address shown on its contact page. If you applied with us, message our team and we will chase it.

    When the e-visa is granted

Open the PDF and check every detail against your passport: full name, date of birth, nationality, passport number, and the dates the visa is valid for. An issued e-visa cannot be amended. If something is wrong, you need a new application, so it is worth checking the day it arrives rather than at the airport.

Then print it and keep the PDF on your phone. Airlines check it at check-in and immigration checks it on arrival.

    When it is not granted

The government fee is not refunded when an e-visa is refused, and the portal does not always say why. The usual causes are a photo or passport scan that didn't meet the rules, information that didn't match the passport, or something in the travel history the applicant didn't declare.

You can apply again with the problem fixed. If you applied with us, our refund guarantee applies - see our terms - and we will tell you what went wrong before you decide.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I check my Vietnam e-visa status with just my passport number?

No. The official lookup needs the application number from your confirmation email, together with your email address and date of birth.

I've lost my e-visa application number. What can I do?

Search your inbox and spam folder for the confirmation email from the portal. If it is gone, contact the portal's support address with your passport details and payment date.

Does "processing" mean something is wrong?

No. It simply means the file hasn't been decided yet. Most stay in processing for three to five working days.

Do I need to print my e-visa?

Yes. Carry a printed copy as well as the PDF. Airline staff and immigration officers may ask to see it.

Can I travel while my application is still processing?

No. You need the granted e-visa before you board. If you fly in the next few days, see urgent Vietnam visa options, or look up your passport on the nationality pages in case you can enter visa-free.
